Wow! Talk about intrusive, manipulative, and selling your daughter.... Ruth, you were like a marionette and a head of cattle being sold at the market, simultaneously. How awful!

I don't think that the Gothard organization can claim copyright or trademark infringement. I mean, aren't these "qualities" everyday English words? Also, what about religious scholars who want to study this cult? You might have to make use of footnotes and stuff. I know that this is overly-academic and legalistic, but it's CYA.

I'm guessing tact is not one of the 49 character qualities, given the behavior of your parents. </snark>
What a awful thing to go through

It's absurd for them to try to stop you from using the character traits--I can't imagine those can be trademarked. Look at "The Book of Qualities," for instance, by J. Ruth Gendler. I'd say it's clearly general domain and since they haven't said (yet) that they want to sue, I'd keep using them until they escalate to that threat. I doubt they have extra money for lawsuits and they have no legal leg to stand on. Free speech trumps most things in this regard. Look at the things tabloids get away with writing every day of the week. Plus even if you have a copyright or trademark, you have to demonstrate that you've always enforced it previously. They are free to post rebuttals. If all they've got is a pitiful attempt at intimidation, they are admitting they can't really counter what you're writing.

Character traits are open domain, and quoting small passages of copyrighted information for the purposes of a report, story, etc., is legal anyway. Chances are Gothard wanted it down for the reason Scientology keeps everything super secret - non-followers will see it as nuts, which the followers are braindwashed to think it's supernaturally perfect.

Where can I find the other 16 installments? I very much want to read. This one is pretty uncomfortable though. I can't imagine us pretty much selling our baby-daughter. FFS, all that matters to us is that she and her future partner make each other happy.

Can you all let me know if that "Stories" tab is too obscure? Are you all aware that it's there? Just want feedback so I can improve navigation on NLQ if necessary. Thx.

Wow. I have just finished reading your entire story. I have known so many ATI families. At first I thought how wonderful these kids are. Now I know otherwise. A beautiful young woman I know married a leader's son. I like you can't give too many details, but his parents are nationally known speakers and writers that adhere to Gothard's and even more Doug Phillips idealogy. I saw her about a year ago and I was shocked at how bad she looked. She had three kids at that time and is now expecting a fourth any day. My heart just broke for her as she was chasing the three she had around. Her husband had chosen not to come with her as it was an event honoring one of her family members and he was busy. I am just so sickened and guilty about my involvement in this movement as I feel like I have may have influenced people into such a destructive way of life. No more, I will ask hard questions now as I am at this moment anyway still very close to some strict adherents to this idealogy. Whenever they shun me I will let this forum know just how close to some of the main proponents I am. Right now I would like to keep these relationships as long as possible to maybe open some eyes.

When it comes to families who encourage their children to marry very young, is it just so that they will be less likely to question their roles or to get them out of the house so they won't be another mouth to feed?

No wonder this ended it all. What a disgusting way to treat a daughter.

It might be easier to make the stories link a page all of it's own with a brief description of the story headed by the main picture that is in use at the time. It's a bit difficult to use a drop-down menu when there is so much information!
