hello all! I am not, and have never been christian or anything else. I stumbled opun this site. I find the stories fascinating, and so well written. I would like to ask you women what you think about Gayle Haggard and her choice to stand by her man. I love this site. I read it everyday. I love it when new stories are posted.

Welcome!! I really like your name. As for Gayle Haggard, that is a big subject. I'd have to give that some more thought....

My thoughts on Gayle:
1. Many women don't want to lose their place in the church as a married couple. It's easier to stay with the devil you know than become a single mom. You get lots of kudos and support for putting up with this crap if you are a christian woman, especially in the public eye. This COULD be her.
2. Genuinely believes the whole process she's being led through, the repentance, reason for sin, triumphant testimony promised at the end. This COULD be her.
3. Genuinely loves the guy and is for whatever reason wanting to work through his flaws and keep her relationship. This COULD be her.
Really, we don't know her. I also think it's possible this seems like the least damaging route to take for the kids and that may be a big factor. I really felt for those poor kids when this news broke, as I recall they were teenagers in an expensive Christian school. Maybe Gayle is choosing the lesser of two evils for them.

I just googled Gayle Haggard and all I can say is "ick". She says in a Today Show interview that she had sex with him the night she found out he was truly having homosexual affairs and using drugs. That's just unhealthy. Welcome RubySlippers.

Welcome, rubyslippers... I'm in agreement with the "ICK" posted by freefromtyranny. Don't think I could handle the whole mess. I'm all for forgiveness and repentance, but a person can only handle so much...

FWIW, I don't think that repentance that leads to forgiveness necessarily means that there MUST be reconciliation to a former state. I can forgive my former husband and not need to take him back.
Some actions have consequences that can't be changed. If I throw myself in front of a train with a thought to commit suicide but only lose my legs, I can repent and be forgiven of wanting to do away with myself, but the legless state goes on...
For myself, that kind of infidelity, while I might be able to forgive, would make an irreconcilable breach in my marriage.
Who knows what is in Gayles and her husband's heart? The only people who really know what happens in a marriage are the marriage partners. And there is such a thing as mercy and grace...
