Hello everyone....
Looking forward to reading the conversations happening here. I was raised in a very similar mindset to Vykie and Laura, albeit as one of the daughters in such a family as opposed to a wife in one. I actually lived with Laura's family for a time as a teenager, when my parents moved out here to follow God's 'will' for their lives, and before they found a house of their own. I haven't really ever processed through that time in my life and am not quite sure how much I should say on the subject anyway.
I'm now 30, married, pregnant with our third and *last* baby, and thrilled to see some open conversation and healing going on, on this subject.
Up until now I have felt hesitant to jump in to the conversations, considering that although I have left the religious beliefs of my youth, some of my decisions seem to correlate. We are an unschooling family, for example, for nothing even close to religious reasons, or for sheltering reasons, but more from an anarchist mentality. My husband and I are free thinking, tattooed, underground music/art as lifestyle types who want our children to feel free to be themselves, generate a real and organic love of life and learning and knowledge, free from the ridiculous child-version of the rat race culture I consider my public school experience to have felt like, and to know that there is more for them to pursue as adults other than materialism and the rat race as success. However, would they display a true desire to try a public school, I also believe in honoring their desire and individual personhood, in a way I lacked during my upbringing as it changed into a very controlling and rigid homeschooling for religious reasons lifestyle.
I am also a UCer and have been a bit hurt and disappointed by the vitriol that I've seen in some conversations here. I don't believe some nebulous being in the sky either exists, or has anything to say to me on the matter. I have gotten appropriate prenatal care, and have support, information, and help with my birth plans, which just do not happen to include a hospital. Neither my homeschooling nor my health care has anything to do with my religious upbringing, and after seeing how the two seem inextricably linked in conversations here, I'm going to have to start talking too, ladies.... ;D
So, nice to meet you.....and here's to some stimulating conversation.
