I was researching for a commentary on the 19th child of Michelle Duggar and blundered into this blog/forum.
Wow ... at least when my great-great whatever was married to Brigham Young there were multiple wives bearing the burden of bearing the children for him.

Welcome, and terrific article! I love the way you made all the absurdities apparent without metaphorically cracking a grin.

Thanks. It was fun to write.
One of the easiest ways to point out flaws in a way of thought is see where it leads you if you follow all the rules.

Hello,
Loved the article ! I was a devoted quiverfull adherent, until I finally came to my senses by noticing exactly those things pointed out in that article.
Fortunately I was saved from the overwhelming drudgery of that lifestyle by a husband who understood that applying Bronze age ideas to 20th century living, was ridiculous. We had only three kids, but I did manage to have the third child born at home, and homeschooled through the 4th grade, before we divorced.
Thanks for the great article.

Outstanding. Welcome. I could use some handmaidens, but I think my neighbors would put up a heck of a fight.

Like cereselle - I, also, spewed out my beverage, although it was hot coffee instead of Coke. Great commentary.

I was thinking about this article yesterday and I honestly wonder if the patriarchs of today thought that they could get away with it, would legalization of polygamy be that far of a stretch for them. Or something akin to "The Handmaid's Tale." Heaven help us all if they ever do manage to get political power in this country.

Jennie, I don't think they could.
They cling to the "we are an embattled minority" mindset because it's the only thing that keeps them at all together. The minute any group of hierarchally-minded Christians gets any sort of power (money, airtime, whatever) they dissolve into feuds. Either personal stuff like the meltdown at 3ABN 2-3 years ago over the station manager's divorce, or doctrinal stuff like the reasons every Mennonite congregation in Missouri has their own dress code.
And the reason so many of the Movement Homeschooler QF types end up in 2- or 3-family churches. There's no one clear way to interpret the Bible so anybody with any ego trip at all can fracture an entire congregation, if you're claiming to follow the Bible literally.

That's a good point, Rosa. You are right, fundies will feud over just about anything. It just bothers me knowing that political control is their eventual goal, even if it seems totally unrealistic to the rest of us.

Re: Quiver Full Movement: You're Doing it Wrong! What a great article! Not blundering at all... a very compelling argument against today's interpretation of the Quiver Full movement. Maybe they should go back to their bibles and check out the origins as you did and get back to the institution as it was meant to be, in the beginning.
