The challenge:
1) Find a verse, a statement from one of the people who speak on God's behalf in the Bible, one of the people we've come to see as "fortune tellers". In other words, a prophet.
2) Post it here.
3) Match that verse to an article you've found on the Internet. Post the link to the article under the verse. If you want to score extra points, or if your match is especially vague, explain why you've chosen this match.
An example (thanks coleslaw!). If one of the verses was Malachi 2:16, which in the online Tanach begins "For the Lord hates putting away", a Dear Heloise column on how to get organized could be a match.
The Rules: There aren't that many . Your "prophecy" should be from the Bible, the text you link to can't be.
Apart from that, you are pretty free. Don't worry too much about your Bible verse being a prophecy, pretty much any Bible verse will do. Feel free to use verses completely out of context. Choose the Bible translation that suits you best. Enter as many times as you want.
Remember, this is not a Bible bashing booth. This is supposed to be funny, not offensive. And we want everyone to feel welcome. There are people here who regard the Bible as their holy book. If you don't and you wonder what would be offensive to someone who does, use this rule, If you wouldn't want someone to say it about something that’s important to you, don’t say it about the Bible
Some verses to get you started:
If you are having trouble coming up with Bible verses, here are some examples to get you started:
Prophecies that seem to go well... or not well at all... with the way of thinking/living of the religious right:
Leviticus 19: 33-34 33 " 'When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. 34 The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.
2 Samuel 7:3 Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you."
Luke 21:23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.
And some random ones:
1 Samuel 8: 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.
Jeremiah 10:1 Do not (…) be terrified by signs in the sky
Amos 2: 16 Even the bravest warriors will flee naked on that day, declares the LORD.
Zephaniah 1:8 On the day of the LORD's sacrifice I will punish (...) all those clad in foreign clothes.
Malachi 2:16 For the LORD, the God of Israel, said that he hates putting away
Revelations 3: 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Revelations 22:14: "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.
The prize: Everyone who participates in the NLQ Fortune Telling booth will be entered into a drawing to win a "like new" hardcover copy of "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd.
Have fun!
