My name is Lisafer and I'm a 47-yr-old lifelong resident of the deep south. Former Christian, former cheerleader, can't seem to get off anti-depressants, twice-married and twice-divorced, mother of two sons, aged 26 and 10. Been to college, been to rehab, been to jail (twice! for petty theft?!?! WTF!!??, right?). Raised in church, alcoholism & bipolar/depression issues deep within close-knit family of uber-talented under-achievers. Lots of weird early losses. Been back to church, been to hell a couple of times, so I already know where it is. Almost died giving birth to ten-yr old...coma for 5 days...grandparents now have custody...
By looking at me, or meeting me at work you'd have no idea how freakin' insane I find myself!
Have a long exciting story myself, and to quote tapati above:
"I maintain an interest in how fundamentalist religious systems affect women and that's what drew me to No Longer Quivering. I've enjoyed reading the many comments on the blog and look forward to getting to know you all better. "
but I would add "an interest in how fundamentalist religious systems affect EVERY one who's RAISED in 'em!"
Laura and Vyckie, you are both excellent writers with amazing and touching stories, I'm waiting for both your next chapters! And it's great to already have such an intelligent, eclectic base of fans/commenters!
Carry on ladies, and Quiver NO MORE!

Hi Lisafer! You're right, I'm sure it has a negative impact on everyone in the system, even the men though I'm sure they don't think so. I believe you can't oppress someone else without in turn hurting yourself, cutting off a part of what makes you human, hardening your heart.
I look forward to hearing more of your story.

Lisafer ~ as I was reading your intro. it totally made me think of my sister, Sandy. I'm getting ready to post a series titled "The Sandy Factor" because her life and her story are an integral part of mine. Some of what I plan to share will be deeply disturbing ~ I'm telling it (with Sandy's permission) because of what you are talking about here ~ fundamentalism JUST PLAIN DOESN'T WORK ~ AND, IN FACT, IT REALLY IS DEVASTATING for those who are not especially bright, privileged, or favored. So ~ stay tuned. We're not meaning to leave you all in suspense waiting for the next installments of our stories ~ we're working on 'em But I also think it's important to give us all time to switch over to this forum and interact with the various intros. I know I'm really enjoying all these personal stories from such a wide-range of backgrounds and beliefs.
