Hi, I'm Tapati, which is pronounced to rhyme with cup o' tea, accent third syllable.
I have a son and daughter and 3 grandchildren, 2 boys and 1 girl.
I am a former member of the Hare Krishna Movement which was an offshoot of the Gaudiya Vaishnava religion of India. I became interested in this religion as a teenager by listening to George Harrison's music. He was loosely affiliated with the movement. I was 15 at the time and later moved into a temple when I was 17, where I met my husband.
In 1983 I left him and in 1989, after some soul-searching upon "coming out," I left the beliefs and practices behind as well. I gradually became interested in Wicca and maintain an eclectic practice. I also read a lot of Buddhist writers and enjoy hearing about a wide variety of spiritual paths with an emphasis on mysticism in different traditions.
In college I took a number of Women Studies classes and did my work study in the Women's Center where I helped produce events and provided peer counseling. I got my degree in Anthropology and was planning to go to grad school but before I graduated with my B.A., my son had a serious bicycle accident and suffered traumatic brain injury and nearly died. I stopped my education at that point to care for him during his rehab and eventually found work as a bookkeeper. I started an online web zine called Uppity Women Magazine in 1998 and kept it going until my heart surgery in 2001. Following my recovery I trained for and spent time on a suicide crisis line as a volunteer.
I've been married to my second husband, Dave, since 1998 and we have a marriage of equals. Most importantly, to me, our marriage is completely non-violent, something I never take for granted.
In 2005 I started a forum for former Hare Krishna devotees at gaudiya-repercussions.com.
I maintain an interest in how fundamentalist religious systems affect women and that's what drew me to No Longer Quivering. I've enjoyed reading the many comments on the blog and look forward to getting to know you all better.
