We were always 5-10 minutes early for everything except going to my maternal grandparents house - in that case we were always late, I have no idea why. Usually we all wanted to head over but my parents were like no, wait and there'd be something we had to do first - usually just on holidays when my uncle and his family came. We usually did road-trips the night before so we didn't have to stop, or if we did stop, we'd leave early the next morning but the kids would have already slept through most of it.

Did the kids really sleep in the car if you left at 5 am? A couple of years ago, a friend of mine and I did a 14-hour roadtrip with our 5 kids, all 7 and under. We thought we would be very clever and leave at 3 am, and the kids would sleep and we could eat breakfast in Reno.
The actual result was that we had wired, grumpy kids for the next 3 hours, and her kids got carsick sooner than usual--the youngest started 30 minutes in! She has the world's barfiest children, I swear. It's a good thing she has that DVD player in her van.

Lol. I sometimes wonder how we survived driving to vacations without a DVD player. Would have prevented some fighting between me and my sister at least. Haha.
Happy birthday, Ruth!

Thank ghed, I guess, that my "family" was just myself, my uncle, and my grandmother... but my family *did* have the need to be insanely punctual, like keeping our clocks set ahead 5 minutes...
...it's rubbed off on me too.

(I think I am signed in - if not this is sisof9 First, Ruth - I am so so sorry you got hurt!!! *HUGS and prayers* BTW, Happy 26!! It's a great age to be - the best people (ie me ) are this age! Secondly, Your tale me laugh and a little sad. We had many of the same experiences. The kitty litter thing was really weird though - I had never heard of that! It rarely happened, but those times when my dad would actually stop the car and heaven bless us if he had to get up... wow... But yes, I remember those days - I thought that I was a bad traveller until I started riding in busses and with my hubby and with other people I very very very rarely get carsick now, but I did ALL THE TIME as a kid!! I think it was a mixture of my dad's driving, the stress and noise from all the kids, and the books on tape. My mom LOVES books on tape and even though it makes half of us nauseous we'd listen to HOURS of books on tape on trips. Now, don't get me wrong I DID enjoy them as a little kid and it DID help pass the time, but as we got older it just made the older ones feel sick.

When I was little I couldn't go for more than 2-3 hours without getting sick, eventually I got it up to 4, but I'm over it now. My family was pretty quick to adapt and carry a waste basket in the car and let me sit in front or somewhere I can see the road (also, they didn't force me to eat much and I really watched my intake). The kids would get it occasionally, but you know, who doesn't once in a while? I think the only other one who (relatively) consistently gets sick on road trips is my closest sister (12).

I've been cracking up at some of the comments on this tread. Cat litter, eh?LOL When our boys were small (when I say 'our' I mean the mother of our sons, Joanne and I) we never had a problem with barfing . . . that I recall. But we did carry a pee jar along for the little guys to relieve themselves in. I remember driving down the road on one trip and Jonathan, our oldest, had to go (he was 4 or something like) and all of a sudden I heard Joanne hollering, "Jonathan, quit! Jonathan quit!!" because he had filled the jar and was squirting everywhere. We all got 'sprinkled' that day. Joy to the world, eh? ;D 'Sfunny now . . . . not so much then. Which reminds me, I should mention that episode to him, now that he's an old guy of 52, to prove just how lucky he is to still be alive, eh? Y'all treat each other kindly now. John

Lol. I sometimes wonder how we survived driving to vacations without a DVD player. Would have prevented some fighting between me and my sister at least. Haha. When I was a teen, those VCRs in vans started showing up. My mom thought they were completely decadent, no way were we ever getting one! (My mom has a funny catalogue of decadence. TV you have to pay for, club stores you have to pay to shop in, and TVs in the car. She's kind of a hippie.) No, our family roadtrips involved a small pickup truck with a camper cover. We kids would make a sort of nest in the back with sleeping bags and suitcases, my two brothers and I would lie parallel to each other with our separate books and Walkmen, and our youngest brother had to put up with lying across our feet. Actually it was pretty fun, I think only because of the Walkmen--and none of us ever got carsick! It's funny now because it's so incredibly illegal, but at the time it was no big deal. Of course that stopped when my baby sister was born in 1987 and we no longer fit. We got a giant 70's van around then.
