i just got this from NGJ - Dear NGJ Supporter, NGJ and the Pearls come to you requesting your prayers. On Saturday February 6, 2010 in Paradise, CA, a tragedy occurred. Lydia Schatz, a 7-year-old girl died. The Paradise Post reported, “Ridge parents Kevin and Elizabeth Schatz are charged with murder and torture following the death of 7-year-old Lydia Schatz and the hospitalization of 11-year-old Zariah Schatz.” Subsequently, many false accusations have been made about NGJ and the Pearls. (Read the Official Statement from NGJ.) This Thursday March 18, 2010, Michael Pearl will be interviewed live on CBS’s The Early Show and given the chance to answer the critics. The Show airs from 7:00 – 8:00 am EST and the interview will be at approximately 7:30 am. Please pray for Michael as he prays and prepares for this interview that God will give him clarity of mind and spirit to answer wisely all the questions that are put to him. Also pray that the report and the interviewer will be honest and fair. Inform your family, friends, and fellow believers and encourage them to pray also. Thank you in advance for your diligence in prayer and support. Your fellow servants in the Lord Jesus Christ, — The NGJ Staff It SOUNDS like they admit it is a tragedy... i wonder if mr. pearl will be "laughing" on the interview... Sounds more to me like they're upset not that someone died, but that people are giving them a bad name.

i just got this reply... fast reply, but it does feel a bit form letterish *sigh* at least they replied :] Dear Didi, Thank you for your email and your sincere desire for what is best in responding to this tragedy. Below is the link to both the District Attorney's comments and the official statement from No Greater Joy Ministries, Inc regarding the Schatz case which was issued within a couple of days of learning of Lydia Schatz's death. This was Michael's initial heartfelt response. www.nogreaterjoy.org/answers/response-to-schatz-caseIt is obvious to anyone who cares to examine the facts that it is the rejection of the parenting philosophy espoused by the Pearls and No Greater Joy Ministries, Inc that contributed to this tragedy. Subsequent statements by the District Attorney and media reports continue to point out the fact that what the Schatz's did was in complete contradiction to what the Pearls and NGJ teach. Those that ignore this reality do so only to perpetuate the lies to sensationalize this tragedy. Michael's article, "Michael Pearl Laughs at Critics", was in response to subsequent accusations and attacks by those trying to associate No Greater Joy Ministries and the Pearls with the Schatz case. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Chuck Joyner Assistant General Manager No Greater Joy Ministries, Inc.

Excuse me? What the Schatzes did was follow to the letter the Pearl's teachings. How is that in any way a contradiction their books? They rejected Pearl's parenting philosophy how exactly?
They're really trying to distance themselves from the harm they've caused. Either that or they're completely bonkers.

So, we could start out by getting people to file complaints en masse to the IRS: www.nonprofitexpert.com/faq/q24.htmFiling a Complaint Members of the public may send information that raises questions about an exempt organization's compliance with the Internal Revenue Code by submitting Form 13909, Tax-Exempt Organization Complaint (Referral) Form. Form 13909 and any supporting documentation may be submitted in a variety of ways. They can be sent via: Mail to IRS EO Classification, Mail Code 4910DAL, 1100 Commerce St., Dallas, TX 75242-1198, Fax to 214-413-5415, or Email to eoclass@irs.gov. Submission of Form 13909 is voluntary. This is an excellent idea, and I hope everyone concerned about the Pearls using their tax exempt 501 (c) (3) corporate status to aid and abet physical child abuse has already followed km's lead and filed their complaint. For those who still haven't, here is some additional necessary information. The 13909 Form asks for an Employer Identification Number. In this box, enter No Greater Joy's number, which is 62-1855964. Their business address is: No Greater Joy Ministries, Inc. 1000 Pearl Road Pleasantville, TN 37033-1796Michael is President, Debi is Vice President. Under "Nature of Violation," I checked " Income/assets are being used to support illegal or terrorist activities." Under "Description of Activities" I wrote (on a separate page): "As part of their "ministry," the president and vice president of No Greater Joy Ministries, Inc., Michael and Debi Pearl, in their books and website, advocate child discipline techniques which constitute illegal child abuse when followed by parents. These include whipping babies only a few months old in order to "train" them not to sin, and using lengths of quarter inch plumbing supply line to whip toddlers until they are left "without breath to complain" (sources: www.nogreaterjoy.org/articles/general-view/archive/2001/october/01/in-defense-of-biblical-chastisement-part-2/ and www.nogreaterjoy.org/articles/general-view/archive/1998/august/01/angry-child/ ). "These sorts of practices leave marks on children's bodies, which meets the standards of physical child abuse in most US states. (In February, a 7 year old girl in California, Lydia Schatz, died as the result of a prolonged whipping with a quarter inch plumbing supply line from parents who stated to police that they were following the Pearls' advice. Upon autopsy the child was found to have, in the words of the pathologist, "multiple whip-like striations between the child's lower back and knees.") "The Pearls counsel parents to hide these "discipline" techniques from relatives, neighbors, and members of the parents' church, lest such people call the "gestapo," (meaning child protection authorities). They advise their readers to cut off all contact with anyone, including the children's grandparents, who criticize the use of these abusive "child training" techniques, thus avoiding law enforcement involvement. Hence, the Pearls clearly recognize that the advice they are giving parents, if followed, will likely involve unlawful actions, and they use the resources of their tax exempt 501(c)(3) corporation to promote such illegal activities while paying no taxes." There is also a box you may check if you wish, which states "I am concerned that I might face retaliation or retribution if my identity is disclosed." I left my box unchecked. Michael Pearl is welcome to retaliate against me if he wishes. The two of us can go one on one with plumbing supply lines. It will be interesting to see how tough he is when attempting to take one of those things to someone larger than one eighth his own size.

I have heard that glue sticks are used to whip very small children. Was this a Pearl suggestion or some other nutter?

Inside our child abuse investigation: the shocking cases of Rachel Limon, the Schatz family and more The North State has seen a series of shocking child abuse cases over the past few months. We received such overwhelming response to these recent stories, it prompted us to take a deeper look at the problem. Action News has spent the past few weeks producing a 30-minute special report called “For the Children’s Sake.” It will air on Thursday, March 25 at 9pm (after NCAA basketball) on CBS 12. We hope you will join us for this in-depth examination about how we as a society are caring for our kids. We also offer ways you can help kids who are in need of support. community.khsltv.com/blogs/kelli_blog/archive/2010/03/23/4320143.aspx

I've got this set up to tape tonight. It's only 30 minutes, though, so I don't expect anything terribly in-depth. I'll let you know.

I just watched the segment on the Schatzes; don't know if they'll go back to them at the end, but I'm going to go to bed now anyway. They did not report extensively on the two girls, actually, but mostly on the Pearl books. There were direct quotations, some of which I've also seen here. They also showed Pearl's response about not advocating child abuse and never hitting in anger, but then came back with pretty damning quotations on what to do with a 'defiant child.' Apparently the 3 adopted children were characterized as "the defiant ones in the family," with the bio-children who were raised within the system being used to it (or broken, IMO). They had footage of the family from a few years ago when the adoptions took place (which was on the news I guess), as well as the expected exterior shots of the home, mug shots, and court footage.
Mike Ramsey, the DA, was shown saying that he thinks the philosophy is awful, but it's his job to prosecute this case, not the Pearls. I suspect that people have been asking him over and over what he thinks of the Pearls, and of course he'd never heard of them before last month.
I was more than a little shocked to realize that I had actually met Elizabeth Schatz a couple of times in the past--I guess a couple of years ago. Not that I'd had a conversation with her or anything--she was very soft-spoken and slightly nervous sounding, and I remember she said something disparaging about women who get master's degrees, which would lead right to working outside the home (and all the implied evils that brings--you'll know about all that). And I popped up with "I have a master's degree and I stay home with my kids." (I didn't even think, it's not like I had a logical response prepped.) And she backed down and said she didn't want to argue about it--not that I had been argumentative. She seemed nice enough and all, but that's the point, isn't it? It was in a large group with a lot of people I didn't know. There, that's the extent of that.

And, none of the Pearl children are LEGALLY married. Pearl objects to engaging in the same legal institution as the Sodommites. You can probably find it buried still on the site. It was in the article about his youngest daughter getting married several years ago when he bragged about that fact. www.nogreaterjoy.org/articles/general-view/archive/2009/june/02/holy-matrimony-2/In the interest of reporting fairly, I thought it best if he can speak for himself. I'm not sure your comment is accurate. They have marriage contracts on file with the courts. There is no statement that they aren't "legally married". Just that they didn't get a "license"--at least 4 out of 5 didn't, according to him. The truth is, they are all getting stranger all the time. The Dreaming site is downright strange and the 7x Sunday site has lots of stuff about hoarding, catastrophes, etc. No thanks.

There is a new Oprah campaign to petition her to do an interview an a Lisa Ling type investigation into the Pearl's teachings. Will you also send in letters asking her to do so? www.oprah.com/ownshow/process_plug.htmlThe more letters she receives on this matter, the more likely she is to do a show on it. Please respond if you do send a letter, so there will be a rough estimate of how many people are participating in the Oprah campaign.Thanks.

Mothersson's posted link to the page on Oprah's site doesn't work, but this one does: www.oprah.com/ownshow/plug_form.html?plug_id=216 Here is what I wrote: Back in February, Lydia Schatz, a seven year old, was whipped to death by her parents. This was not a case of an angry, out of control parent "losing it" and hitting harder than they intended to. Lydia's parents were following the advice of Michael Pearl, author of "To Train Up A Child" and CEO of No Greater Joy Ministries. He also runs a website at nogreaterjoy.org. Pearl advises parents to whip children with a quarter inch plumbers' supply line from Home Depot, and not to stop until their child's cries are "a broken, submissive whimper." Lydia's parents used the exact gauge of supply line Pastor Pearl recommends, continuing for hours, waiting for the submissive cry which never came. Lydia eventually died from kidney failure. I think it would be both timely and relevant if you would do a Lisa Ling style investigation of Mr. Pearl and his influence on the Christian Homeschooling movement. Many people who read his books and practice his methods probably watch your show. Featuring a critical look at Mr. Pearl and his ministry might save another child somewhere from being whipped to death.

Thank you so much Chris☺ I really think if we band together, we can get an interview/ investigation conducted. I initially wrote over a page but that email does not allow more than 1000 characters with spaces.
